오늘날 우리에게 부활은 어떤 의미인가?

마가복음 16:1-8

(부활주일)

 

예수를 믿지 않는 사람이었다 할지라도, 옛날 사람들은 적어도 일년에 두 번은 교회에 갔다. 그것이 언제인가? 부활절과 성탄절이다. 부활절에는 계란을 줘서 갔고, 성탄절에는 크리스마스 선물을 줘서 갔다. 요즘 사람들은 부활절이나 성탄절에 교회를 가는 게 아니라, 결혼식과 장례식이 있을 때 교회에 간다. 웃픈 현실이다.

 

부활절이 중요할까, 성탄절이 중요할까? 부활절이 중요하다. 왜냐하면, 부활이 없었다면 우리는 예수님에 관해 알지 못했을 것이다. 아니, 아예 관심도 없었을 것이다. 부활 때문에, 우리는 예수님의 탄생에 관해서도 관심을 갖는 것이다.

 

우리 아파트에서 지난 주에 부활절 이벤트가 있었다. 그런데, 광고를 보니, 부활절 이벤트를 하면서 특별 손님이 방문한다고 되어 있었다. 누군가 봤더니, Easter Bunny였다. 상업주의의 가장 큰 문제점은 종교성을 퇴색시키고 그것을 상품화한다는 것이다. 성탄절이 상품화된 지는 이미 오래됐다. 성탄절에 우리에게 오는 것은 아기 예수가 아니라, 산타 클로스이다. 부활절에 우리에게 오는 것은 부활의 주님이 아니라, Easter Bunny다. 이러한 상업화 시대에 살고 있는 우리 그리스도인들에게 다가 오는 질문은 ‘오늘날 우리에게 부활은 어떤 의미인가’가 될 수 밖에 없다.

 

성금요일 마지막에 일어난 사건은 예수의 죽은 시체를 무덤에 장사 지내는 것이었다. 아리마대 요셉이라는 사람에 의해서 예수가 무덤으로 옮겨지고, 예수가 장사된 것을 확인한 사람은 막달라 마리아와 요세의 어머니 마리아였다. 그런데, 오늘 우리가 읽은 말씀을 보면, 안식 후 첫날, 향품을 들고 예수님의 장사된 무덤을 처음 찾은 사람도 막달라 마리아이다.

 

성경에 보면, 막달라 마리아는 예수님의 제자 중 가장 훌륭한 제자였던 것 같다. 그녀는 예수님이 처형될 때 그 자리에 있었고, 예수님의 장례식에도 함께 했고, 안식 후 첫날, 예수님의 무덤을 찾아가기도 했다. 다른 말로 하자면, 예수님의 곁에는 언제나 막달라 마리아가 있었다. 그래서 기독교 역사에서 막달라 마리아는 수많은 전설의 주인공이 되기도 했다.

 

대표적으로, 막달라 마리아는 불후의 명작 <지저스 크라스이스 슈퍼스타>의 여자 주인공으로 등장한다. 거기에서 막달라 마리아는 예수님에 대한 사랑의 마음을 담아 이러한 유명한 노래를 부른다. “I don't know how to love him. What to do, how to move him.” 10여년 전 전세계를 강타했던 <다빈치 코드>라는 책에서는 막달라 마리아가 예수님의 부인으로 등장한다. 그 책에는 그녀가 예수님과의 사이에서 딸을 낳았고, 그 자손이 아직까지 살아 있다는 주장이 담겨 있다.

 

게다가, 성경(정경)에 포함되지 않는 외경에 보면, ‘마리아 복음서’라는 것이 있다. 거기에 보면, 막달라 마리아가 예수님의 최고의 제자 자리를 놓아두고 사도 베드로와 대결하는 장면이 나온다. 예수님과 관련된 이런 저런 이야기에 막달마 마리아가 등장하는 것을 보면 그녀는 예수님을 가장 사랑하던, 훌륭한 제자 중의 한 사람이었음에 틀림없다. 무엇이 예수님을 그토록 사랑하게 만들었을까?

 

예수님과 관련된 여러 가지 이야기에 등장하는 막달라 마리아를 생각하면서, 우리는 우리 자신의 모습에 대해서 생각해 본다. 나는 내 인생 가운데 예수님과 관련된 어떠한 이야기를 만들고 있는가? 예수님 때문에, 내 삶의 어떠한 부분이 극적으로 바뀌었는가? 예수님 때문에 내 삶에 변화를 가져온 것이 있는가? 예수님 때문에 포기하게 된 어떠한 것이 있는가? 그분 때문에 내 삶에 행복이 왔는가? 나에게, 예수 그리스도의 부활은 어떤 의미인가?

 

기대하지 않았던(못했던) 어떠한 신비로운 일을 경험한 적이 있는가? 내가 중고등학교를 다닐 때만해도, 고등학교를 들어가기 위해서 시험을 치러야 했다. 그때는 고등학교 들어가는 것도 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 고등학교 입학 시험을 치르러 가던 날 아침, 몇몇 친구들이 우리 집에 와서 우리 아버지의 기도를 받고, 우리 아버지가 태워주시는 차를 타고 시험 함께 갔다(상문고등학교에서 시험을 봤다). 그런데, 그 중에 한 친구는 “나는 고등학교 입학시험에서 당연히 떨어질 거야”라고 생각하는 친구가 있었다. 시험이 끝나고 결과가 나왔을 때, 그 친구는 기쁜 얼굴로 나에게 와서 고등학교 시험에 붙었다고 말했다. 그가 말하기를 자기가 시험에 붙은 이유는 딱 한 가지라고 했다. “나 답안지 밀려 썼다. 그래서 붙었다!” 그리고 나서, 그 친구가 해 준 이야기는 아직도 기억에 생생하게 남아 있다. “너네 아버지가 기도해 주실 때, 정말 마음이 이상하더라. 그리고, 나한테 신비스러운 일이 일어났어. 그래서 내가 답안지를 밀려 쓴 것 같아.” 전혀 예상치 못한 일이 벌어진 것 때문에 내 친구는 고등학교 시험에 합격했고, 나와 함께 고등학교를 다녔다.

 

동일한 일이 오늘 우리가 읽은 본문에서 일어났다. 그들은 당연히 예수님의 죽은 시체가 무덤 안에 있을 거라고 생각했다. 그래서 그들은 시체에 바르는 향료를 가지고 무덤에 갔다. 그런데, 놀라운 일이 벌어졌다. 무덤을 막고 있었던 큰 돌은 옮겨져 있었고, 그 안에 들어가자, 무덤 안에 앉아 있는 흰 옷을 입은 청년(천사)을 보았다. 그 청년이 무덤에 온 여자들에게 말했다. “놀라지 말라 너희가 십자가에 못 박히신 나사렛 예수를 찾는구나 그가 살아나셨고 여기 계시지 아니하니라.”

 

이 이야기를 들은 여자들은 놀라서 무덤에서 나와 도망쳤다. 그리고 그들은 무서워서 누구에게도 아무 말 못했다. 왜냐하면, 전혀 기대하지 못했던 일이 일어났기 때문이다. 사람들은 흔히 기대치 못한 일을 당하면 할 말을 잃는 법이다.

 

무덤은 비었다. 그것은 예수님이 다시 살아나셨다는 뜻이다. 기독교에서는 이것을 ‘부활’이라고 부른다. ‘부활’은 단순히 죽었다 다시 살아나는 것을 의미하는 것이 아니라, ‘하나님에 의해서 일으켜 세워졌다’는 뜻이다. 이것은 십자가에 못 박힌 예수님이 한 일을 하나님께서 인정하셨다는 뜻이다. 이것은 그가 걸어간 십자가의 길이 하나님이 보시기에 옳은 일이었다는 뜻이다.

 

하나님이 인정하신 옳은 길을 걸어가신 예수님을 만난 사람들에게는 어떠한 변화가 일어났다. 그들은 예수님처럼 하나님 나라의 정의를 갈망했고, 예수님처럼 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑했다. 그들은 예수님처럼 자기의 몸을 자기의 것이라 주장하지 않고, 이 세상의 죄 때문에 불의하게, 그리고 불쌍하게 죽어가는 자들을 위해서 자기의 몸을 내어 놓았다.

 

오늘 우리도 성경을 통해 빈무덤을 본다. 내 눈으로 직접 본 것이 아니라서 못 믿겠는가? 그렇게 말하는 사람은 자기를 속이는 것이다. 우리가 현재 알고 있는 대부분의 것들은 우리가 눈으로 본 것이 아니다. 그것들은 누군가에 의해서 발견된 것을 간접적으로 들은 경우가 대부분이다. 여러분이 다리에서 주워 온 자식이 아니라는 것을 어떻게 아는가?(How do you know that you are not a child picked up under the bridge? 이것은 한국의 조크인데, 영어회중이 이해할지 모르겠다. 만약 무슨 말인지 잘 모르면 부모님께 물어보라. 나 다리에서 주워왔어?) 여러분은 여러분이 엄마 뱃속에 있는 것을 보았고, 이 세상에 나올 때 엄마의 자궁을 통해서 나온 것을 보았는가?

 

성경 말씀은 꾸며낸 이야기가 아니라, 경험한 이야기들을 기록한 것이다. 예수님을 따르던 제자들은 예수님의 부활을 경험했다. 그래서 그들은 ‘복음서’라고 하는 장르를 통해 그 당시 최고의 매체라고 불리는 종이에 기록한 것이다. 그들은 분명히 비어 있는 무덤을 보았다.

 

그 당시, 빈무덤을 경험한 사람들은 그들의 삶 가운데 이런저런 변화를 겪었다. <예수 그리스도 슈퍼스타>에서 막달라 마리아가 노래한 것처럼, "I've been changed, yes really changed. In these past few days, when I've seen myself, I seem like someone else. 나는 변했어요, 맞아요 정말 변했어요, 최근 며칠간 나 자신을 돌아보았을 때 나도 다른 사람처럼 보여요.”, 빈무덤을 경험했을 때, 다른 말로 하면, 부활하신 예수님을 만났을 때, 그들은 다른 사람으로 변했다. 우리는 그들의 변한 모습을 사도행전에서 본다.

 

여러분에게 묻고 싶다. 오늘날 여러분에게 ‘빈무덤’은 무엇을 의미하는가? 오늘날, 여러분에게 부활은 어떤 의미인가? 아무 것도 아닌가? 아니면 무엇인가? 예수님의 부활이 어떻게 여러분의 삶을 변화시켰는가? 시간을 가지고 ‘예수님의 부활’에 대하여 깊은 묵상의 시간을 가지기를 소망한다.

What does the resurrection mean to us today?

 (Mark 16:1-8)

1. Even if they did not believe in Jesus, people went to church twice at least a year before. When is it? Easter and Christmas. They went to church on Easter Sunday for an egg, and Christmas for a Christmas present. Nowadays, people do not go to church on Easter or Christmas but go to church when they have weddings and funerals. It is a ridiculous reality.

 

2. Is Easter important, or is Christmas important? Easter is more important. Because, without the resurrection, we would not have known about Jesus. No, we would not have been interested in Jesus at all. Because of the resurrection, we are also interested in the birth of Jesus.

 

3. There was an Easter event in our apartment last week. By the way, when I saw the advertisement, it was said that a special guest was visiting at the Easter event. It was Easter Bunny. The biggest problem of commercialism is to fade religiousness and commercialize it. It has been a long time since Christmas has been commercialized. Coming to us at Christmas is not Baby Jesus, but Santa Claus. Coming to us in Easter is not the Lord of resurrection, but Easter Bunny. The question that comes to our Christians living in this era of commercialization is 'what does resurrection mean to us today?'

 

4. The last event on Good Friday was to burial the dead body of Jesus in the tomb. It was Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses who confirmed that Jesus was buried by a man named Joseph of Arimathea and that Jesus was buried. By the way, as we read today, the first day after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene was the first to find the burial place of Jesus with the spices.

 

5. In the Bible, Mary Magdalene seems to have been one of the best disciple of Jesus' disciples. She was there when Jesus was executed, at the funeral of Jesus, and on the first day after the Sabbath, she visited Jesus' grave. In other words, there was always Mary Magdalene by Jesus. So, in Christian history, Mary Magdalene has become the heroine of many legends.

 

6. Typically, Mary Magdalene emerges as the heroine in the immortal classic musical, Jesus Christ Superstars. Mary Magdalene calls these famous songs with the love of Jesus. "I do not know how to love him. What do to, how to move him." In a book called <The Da Vinci Code>, which struck the world more than a decade ago, Mary Magdalene appears as the wife of Jesus. The book contains a statement that she had a daughter with Jesus and that her offspring are still alive.

 

7. Furthermore, among the apocrypha that are not adopted as the Bible, there is also ‘the Gospel of Mary’. There, Mary Magdalene comes to the story of competing with the apostle Peter for the position of Jesus' best disciple. It is evident that she was one of the best disciples who loved Jesus when we see the names of Mary Magdalene in the stories related to Jesus in these various forms. What made her so love Jesus Christ?

 

8. Thinking of Mary Magdalene, who appears in so many stories related to Jesus, we look back on ourselves. What kind of life story do I make about Jesus Christ? What part of my life has changed dramatically because of Jesus? Is there something that has been changed because of him? Have you given up on something because of Him? Has happiness come to my life because of Him? To me, what does the resurrected Jesus Christ mean?

 

9. Have you ever experienced mysterious things beyond expectations? When I went to high school, I had to take the exam to go to high school. It was not easy for us to go into a high school then. On the morning of my high school entrance exam, a few of my friends came to my house and got my father's prayer and went to a school (Sang-mun High School) where we took the admission test by my father's ride.  By the way, among them, there was a friend who thought, "Of course, I will fall out of high school entrance examination." When we took the test and the results came out, he was so happy that he came to me and told me that he passed the high school exam. He told me that there was only one reason why he went to the high school entrance exam. "All answers were pushed in writing, so I passed the exam. Then, what the friend told me is still unforgettable. "Your father prayed on the morning of the test, and I was really feeling different. Then, I believe what a mysterious thing seemed to happen. By the way, that was why all answers were pushed in writing." Because of the unexpected thing, my friend passed the exam and went to high school with me.

 

10. The same thing happened in the text we read today. They naturally thought that the dead body of Jesus would be in the grave. So they went to the grave with spices to the body. By the way, an amazing thing happened. The large stone that was blocking the grave had moved, and when they got inside, they saw a young man (angel) in a white dress sitting. He said to the women who came into the grave. "Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here."

 

11. The women who heard these words were amazed and fled from the grave. And they were terrified and could not tell something to anyone. It was because something unexpected happened. It is a way of losing a word when one meets unexpected event.

 

12. The grave was empty. That means Jesus was raised. In Christianity, this is called the Resurrection. 'Resurrection' does not mean simply that the life is back from death, but 'raised up again by God'. This means that God has justified what Jesus did. This means that the way of the cross that he has walked is the righteous thing that God wanted.

 

13. Something changed happened to those who met Jesus Christ who walked in the right path God recognized. They longed for the justice of the kingdom of God like Jesus, and loved their neighbors just as Jesus did. They did not consider their own bodies theirs like Jesus, but gave up their bodies for many who died unjustly and poorly because of the sins of the world.

 

14. We also see an empty tomb today through the Bible. You do not believe it because you did not see it with your eyes? The person who says it is deceiving himself/herself. Most of what we currently know is not what we have seen. They are all indirectly heard of what was discovered by someone. How do you know that you are not a child picked up under the bridge? Did you see yourself in your mother's womb and when you came to the world through your mother's womb?

 

15. The Word of the Bible is a testimony to the experience of what has happened, not a fictitious story. The disciples who followed Jesus experienced the resurrection of Jesus. So they recorded what they saw and heard in a form of a literary genre called the Gospel on paper, the best medium of the time. They obviously saw the empty grave.

 

16. At that time, people who had seen the empty grave experienced some kind of change in their lives. As, in the Jesus Christ Superstars, Mary Magdalene said, "I've been changed, yes really changed. In these past few days, when I've seen myself, I seem like someone else. I have changed, it is true, it has changed. When I look back at myself for the past few days, I look like someone else.", when they experienced the empty grave, or, after meeting the resurrected Jesus, they had changed someone else. We see their change in the Bible, Acts.

 

17. I want to ask you. What does 'the Empty Tomb' mean to us today? Today, what does the resurrection mean to us? Is it nothing? Or what? How did the resurrection of Jesus change your life? I hope that you will have time to meditate deeply 'the resurrection of Jesus' on your own life.
